FTH Juvenile Turf Classic Workout
A Little Magic in the Classic
Was Taylor a little crazy? Some might say so. Why? She entered Houdini into the Juvenile Turf Classic in the Follow the Hoofprints 2 year old series. Why not enter him? He has really come along. Yes, he would be going against some better horses of his age. Yes he would most likely end up a total longshot, but she knew there was just something about him. Something that sent a tiny chill down her spine. He was a champion in the cards. His bloodlines screamed CHAMPION. They screamed FUTURE GRADE ONE. Why not give him a shot in a race like this?
Houdini was still on his high horse after his last workout the week before. He kicked out his hind legs and gave a snort as she rode him onto Atticus Meadows, Sugarhill's turf track. The big black colt held his head high as he nostrils flared in the air. His stride was steady and long. He was incredibly high strung. Taylor held on for the ride. She wasn't going to let the young colt get away from her.
The starting gate was placed at the mile marker. Houdini balked away, at first. "Easy there, big boy. We got this", Taylor said, gliding a hand down his neck. He settled just a little bit, but it was enough to load him into the gate. Once it opened, he pulled himself ahead. He always had such amazing speed. When they headed into the rear stretch, she let him go. His strides were at the longest they could go. He could run forever. He was an extremely talented front runner who was really growing into a perfect racehorse.
She pulled him back a little as they rounded around to the front stretch. Houdini dug into his toes. He wanted to be free. He held his pace as they flew down for the stretch run. He wouldn't let anyone pass him. That is what Taylor was hoping for in the Juvenile Turf Classic. He was good at not letting any horses pass. His speed could really put other horses to shame. He has certainly matured in strength and passion for the track. Past the finish they flew.
Houdini was really coming together. He was growing stronger, each and every single day. Taylor had a legend under her. He would certainly give the other horses entered in the Turf Classic a run of their lives. Yes, he wasn't all too experienced, but he had a huge heart. Maybe he would surprise them all and beat every single one. Who knows? They would just have to wait until race day.
