A New Beginning
It took a while for Rio to settle into Sugarhill. It hadn't been the best change for her. The grooms handled her every day since she came. She slowly warmed up to them and warmed up to Taylor. It was finally time to get a workout in. It was time for Rio to be started on the dirt track. Her transition from Durango Racing Stables was a rough one, but Taylor and her staff have treated her like a princess. The filly was getting there. It would be the first day Taylor would get onto the filly's back, or for anyone to get on her.
Rio was groomed to perfection and tacked up, looking like a professional. She wasn't the tallest horse but she was a long and lanky filly. She was still growing into herself. She had some top lines, which really caught Taylor's eye. She needed a lot of work, but Taylor knew she would make something of herself. She had an inside talent.
Rio nudged Taylor's arm, looking for a treat. "Hold on sweetie. Will give you one, afterwards", Taylor said to her. Rio nodded her head in response. She was one of the sweetest horses you would ever know. Taylor gave her a pat on the shoulder. Once she was mounted she rode Rio out to Baywood Circle. The filly gave a buck, excitement building up inside her. She was beyond happy to feel the track dirt beneath her hooves. The morning had gotten steadily warmer. The sun made a copper sheen on Rio's golden bay coat.
Taylor was about ready to give Rio some more rein when the filly hopped right into a full gallop. She pulled on ahead, just about toppling her rider out of the saddle. Taylor hung on as the filly dashed down the track, her long legs carrying her along. She flew around the far turn. Taylor got a good hand on her as they headed into the homestretch. She hand rode Rio down the straight away. They edged closer and closer to the finish line. Once they got past the wire, Rio let out a whinny of joyfulness. It was a fantastic run for her.
