Runaway Conquistador
Taylor and her assistant trainer, Kelly Maccabee, were up early in the morning. They were going to do a pair workout with Conquistadora and Sugarhill's newest racehorse, Nocturnal Runaway. It was Nancy's bloodlines that attracted Taylor to her. She was the third Night Stalker baby stabled on the farm, now. Dora and Nancy were stabled right next to each other. Dora was extremely nice to the new filly. They were quiet in their stalls when Taylor and Kelly made their way into the barn.
Once the fillies were groomed and tacked the girls mounted and rode out to Baywood Circle. The dirt track was dry. They had to keep the fillies apart because they would playfully nip at each other. Both horses had late speed so it would be quite a competitive dual race. They were going to go a mile. It would be a good run for both horses. Would give them an excellent chance to spread their legs.
Nancy was known to keep running and running, especially during workouts. Her heart never skipped a beat when she graced the racetrack. She was still growing, but had grown quite a bit. The young filly had an exceptional future at Sugarhill. She would truly make a name for herself. She would certainly get some wins in and maybe even an entrance in the Breeders Cup. Taylor had special plans for her. She was entered in the Follow the Hoofprints Juvenile Dirt Mile. Taylor felt it was a good race for her. She would love the competition.
Dora was still in her maiden slump. She finished second in both of her starts. She was entered in the May Maiden Dirt. She had tons of potential. She would race for a while. Taylor could see Dora at Grade One in her future. The filly was a joy to be around, even though she had a highly aggressive side. She would make a wonderful broodmare, someday. She was still growing, as well, though she was a smaller horse. She would forever be known as the first horse of Sugarhill.
Taylor was riding Nancy and Kelly on Dora. They were giving the fillies a good warm-up. The mile marker was ahead of them. It was just about time to let the fillies go and do their own thing. Once they did, the fillies were off. Dora had a neck ahead as they entered the first turn. Nancy was right on her, though. Taylor held her up a little, waiting for the final turn to let her do her run. Dora held the lead as they headed into the back straight away. Kelly kept a loose hold on the bit, but she didn't let the filly get away from her.
The dark bay held off the dark gray as they reached the far turn. Taylor loosened the reins a little bit. "Come on, girl. Let's show them what you were born to do", she whispered into the filly's ear. Nancy flicked her ears back and forth. She obeyed. They headed into the top of the stretch and she was focused on running down the front running filly. Dora's ears flickered violently as she heard the competitive hooves thundering at her side.
The fillies were neck and neck as they headed to the wire. The were both strong closers. Dora tried to hold on, but Nancy got the best of her. Taylor hand rode the dark gray filly to the wire. They past it easily. Nancy kept on going. Kelly had done had Dora slowed and cantering out before Taylor got Nancy to slow. She was an incredible little filly. "Gosh, I love you", Taylor said to her, lovingly patting her neck. The filly snorted in response. She knew she was a superstar.
